Testimonials
In a nutshell, we (heart) Joanna and can't recommend her enough!
Before Joanna, we had spent time on our own trying to dissect difficulties in our relationship and come up with ideas for how we could manage them better. We had really strong ideas about what we wanted to work on to strengthen our marriage and become better partners. Then, 4 months after we got married, our best friends got divorced. At the same time we saw other friends struggling in their relationships. We knew about divorce statistics and we just never expected that statistic to apply to these friends. They were the couple we looked up to and aspired to be. We agreed it was critical to make time and space for building strength in our relationship and prevent what we saw happening with our friends from happening to us. That is when we sought out a therapist.
After we started working with Joanna, it wasn't very long before she had shown us an even deeper level our relationship that we didn’t even know was there. It was really hard work and it was, ultimately, very empowering and very rewarding. She drew us toward our most intimate fears and then gave us a safe place to confront them. She was graceful at addressing each of us as individuals and us as a couple. Joanna gave us insights and tools that allowed us to work at that level with her and on our own.
We are so happy to have taken the time to invest in our relationship and we feel so lucky to have had Joanna as our mentor and guide. Every day we utilize the skills that she taught us. We feel very strong, happy and fulfilled in our relationship because of our time with Joanna." P & P San Francisco
"Dear Joanna,
It would be impossible to express how profoundly transformative our experience with you was. Though we came to you as a couple with a few problems to address, you took us far beyond mere repair to new depths of joy and intimacy in our relationship. Your unique blend of widely divergent disciplines and perspectives, combined with your very natural warmth and insightfulness, created a safe, healing and productive space for us every week, even on occasion over the phone. As we go through the many chapters of our life together, we’ll continue to think of you with great fondness and gratitude."
Lots of love,

"Dear Joanna,
I want to thank you from the deepest part of my soul for the help you provided me over the last year and a half since my wife passed away. What began in my mind as simply "grief counseling", that several of my close friends urged me to seek, soon became for me a much broader soul searching exercise. My heart, soul, and physical health were in turmoil from the most catastrophic even that one could imagine, combined with years of denial and shame regarding what I interpreted as my "personality defects" and "abnormal sexuality. I now realize that I'm not "defective" or "abnormal". Your insight into my situation really helped me to understand many parts of my mental makeup that I've never been able to, nor thought I'd ever be able to understand. I want to especially thank you for helping lead me to the path of meditation.
Happy Holidays and a prosperous, peaceful New Year!."

"Joanna,
Once again I am thinking of you with a grateful heart. I am amazed at the
changes within myself that I have experienced through my own process of
introspection and work. I could never have taken this journey without you
by my side--as a guide, witness, mirror to my struggle and hope. Thank you
for your gentleness, your patience. I continue to wonder at the gift of
myself which you supported me to find over the last several years.
This deeper connection with my soul, my spirit, has led me to a wonderful
relationship and a future marriage--what a joy! I am grateful that you
never ceased to care for me nor challenge me to find, and create, the life
my heart desires. Our time together has also taught me to treasure my
faith, my family and my own need for space, time and reflection within a
too full world. As I juggle many commitments, I am continuing to do yoga
twice a week and I am participating in a prayer group at work---which
includes a small group sharing twice monthly‹daily time for meditation and a
monthly meeting with a spiritual director. I have learned from you, and
from my time with you, that I must remember all these pieces within me‹and
that I must not lose sight of myself even as I build a life with my beloved
partner. I am still challenged by many things of course (life would be so
boring without change), but I feel very blest to have the skills, the
patience and the openness that has grown from my time with you."
Namaste,
G.J. - San Francisco
"Dear Joanna, I've been thinking about you a lot lately and wanted to write. I'm realizing how much you have helped me and how far I've come in my personal work. I've recently referred 2 new clients to you - I just want to thank you again for being there for me in a really difficult time in my life. Thank you for giving me the tools I need to move on and ahead. Looking back you helped me more then I can express. I just feel the need to thank you again. I wish the best for you, always."

My name is Joanna Intara Zim and I welcome you to my Psychotherapy Practice Website. Thanks for visiting. You’ll find information here about who I am and the kind of psychotherapy/counseling services I offer and provide for teens, adults, and couples. You’ll also find information here about my groups, workshops, practice building & consultation services, and trainings, as well as other information that may answer your questions about therapy and how it may be possible that I would be supporting, facilitating, and guiding that process with you.
Since 1988 I have been counseling and working with children, teens, adults, couples and groups. It has been a privilege and an honor to work collaboratively with so many people, courageously opening up to their own journey and healing process of becoming more and more whole, balanced, creative, powerful and listening to their own truest voice, and growing and becoming embodied in that more and more of the time.
My intention and deepest commitment is to provide a safe and supportive environment that allows you to truly discover your authentic, genuine self, and from that place to create anew, in interpersonal, emotional, mental, physical or spiritual aspects of life.

Seasonal Update
The cold winter time is upon us, and many different traditions indicate that this time of year moves us towards psychic strengthening; more able to surrender the passing year and its’ contents and processes. The light is minimal now, and the dark is long, and so the quiet of this time invites us in, way in, so that we can regenerate that which is left from this year and compost it through introspection into seeds of springtime birth with hopes and dreams for renewal in the next cycle. Perhaps this means a deep internal quiet and rest or sleep. Maybe certain aspects of the underneath self are more available to us now in the silence and the cave of winter than they have ever been. The invitation here is to consider, to try on where this may be unfolding within you, and to honor it yourself in a meaningful and compassionate way.
